McLean & Arora: South Asian Families- October 4, 2013

Clinical Work with South Asian Families:

Multigenerational Legacies

Dr Anita McLean & Dr. Kiran Arora

South Asians, one of the fastest growing groups in the Northeast, remain largely underserved by social service and mental health agencies. In this workshop we will explore the relational matrix of South Asian family members living in the US and the impact of immigration on their identity and family values. We will use a cultural developmental framework to examine the value conflicts between South Asian concepts of a healthy self and the cultural imperatives of U.S. culture. We will also highlight the differential impact that gender, birth order, immigrant status and other variables have on the acculturation of different family members. Finally, we will focus on how South Asian families are affected by the current socio-political context of the US and what supportive services they may need.
